Demetrius Brown
Bread & Butterfly
It wasn't until 11th grade when Demetrius decided he wanted to be a chef. After a trip to Providence for the summer break, his Grandfather saw his passion for cooking and drove him past Johnson & Wales University. Soon after, Demetrius made the decision to attend Johnson & Wales with aspirations of being one of the best chefs in the country. Upon graduating, Demetrius moved back to Atlanta where he would begin his working career, building many accolades along the way. In 2020 Demetrius was nominated for Eaters Young Gun Award for his work as the Executive Chef at The Pinewood in Decatur. Not long after, Chef Demetrius started Heritage Supper Club, his own Pop-up Dinner and Supper Club, winning Atlanta Magazine's best Pop Up in Atlanta in 2021. He has also been featured on shows like Beat Bobby Flay, Chopped, and Alex vs. America, among others. In August of 2023 Demetrius became the co-owner of Bread & Butterfly, a well known french bistro/cafe located in the Atlanta village Inman Park, where he has transformed the restaurant into a global culinary phenomenon, focusing the dinner service on food from the African diaspora, specifically the Caribbean. “This is the first step in our purpose of educating our patrons and community about the origins of cuisine throughout Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas.” It also fuels the mission of Demetrius, which is to advance the cuisine of the African Diaspora by reshaping and re-imagining traditional dishes and recipes, creating a story around these “modernized” dishes, and presenting them in a way that is approachable to everyone. "My goal is no longer to just make tasty food. It is to inspire the next generation of chefs and even my contemporaries to push the food industry further.”
